Program History
The Madison Spartan Basketball Program was founded in 1988 as part of
the Dane County Neighborhood Intervention Program. The objective for the
development of the Spartan Basketball Program was to give at risk, low-income
youth exposure and opportunities to organized tournament basketball play.
We hope to teach life choice skills, honor and integrity through the use
of basketball. In keeping with this philosophy, Spartan coaches keep in
mind that they are teachers and role models first, basketball coaches
second.
Mission
Through the vehicle of team sport, the Madison Spartans Youth Basketball
program strives to establish influential relationships with youth that
promote a positive outlook on family, community, education and life.
Goals and Outcomes
- Provide a positive environment in which Spartan basketball can teach
pro-social skills
- Improve player's life choice decision making skills.
- Promote teamwork, as a way to learn, delayed gratification, selflessness,
commitment, communication problem solving and conflict resolution.
- Promote community pride and interaction by parents with and by involvement
in the Spartan Booster Club and by attending their children's games
- Promote academic achievement (Spartan Honor Roll for players that
attain a GPA of 3.0 or higher) and assistance for those below 2.0.
- Provide a positive option for youth to the idleness and lure of the
streets and the desire to become gang and drug involved.
- Promote the development of good citizenship, self-actualization and
adherence to the Spartan Behavior Code.
Colors

(Meaning of Red, Black and Green)
The Afro American flag and colors were chosen by our organization as a
way to instill pride and teach Black history to our players. Many of the
Spartan plays/set are named after famous African Americans.
The colors symbolize:
- Red - for the blood
- Black - for the people
- Green - for Mother Earth
The Madison Spartans are known nationally for our unique uniform color scheme.
Trademark
